Leah Gerrard uses steel wire and basketry techniques to create large-scale abstract sculptures. She was born in Seattle and attended Linfield College in McMinnville OR.
Her unique sculpting method developed by combining her interest in basketry, and jewelry with her desire to create large-scale work. Her sculpture has grown in response to challenges inherent in her designs
She was awarded a Washington State Artist Trust fellowship in 2016 and was also the featured artist at the 2017 Artist Trust auction. She recently became a member of the Shift gallery in Seattle.
“I use steel wire and basketry techniques to create abstract sculpture, striving to inspire emotion and connection in the viewer through the form.”
”When creating a piece, I work towards a lyrical quality encouraging one to stop and breathe for a moment. My process is slow and meditative, my hope is that the process informs the viewer’s experience.”
”I am influenced by my surroundings: the industrial districts of Seattle and the forests of Washington. I have worked in hundred-year-old buildings full of history and also spent many hours in the woods. In Washington, I am able to continually move from industry to nature—and my work reflects that flow, growth, and tension.”
