Patti Christie is life-long native of the Pacific Northwest. Raised in Olympia, she moved to Seattle in 1980 and currently works out of her studio in Magnolia. A fine arts graduate of The Evergreen State College Patti discovered the beauty of pastels 30 years ago. Her landscape expressions are memoirs of her travels from Montana to New Zealand.
Growing up on regular visits to the coast of Washington, the soft tones of the dunes, grasses, and ocean heavily influenced her early career. This style remains evident in her recent work, where colors are soft with little evidence of hard defined lines. The art flows on the paper allowing the viewer a sense of belonging to a specific time of day and season. The understanding of light and shadow is more important to the development of the work than perspective.
“My paintings are meant to evoke a moment of repose; they are an interpretation of what I see and know. Shape and color define the work, it is without social commentary or hidden meaning, meant to put the viewer and painter at ease.
The enjoyment begins with the carpentry of building the boards, applying the ground, and visualizing what the next series may be. Drawing from recent experiences the painting begins. Color and composition are important, but allowing the painting to develop without external visual input its key, working as a child might, allowing the painting to tell me what to do.”
Patti works in chalk pastel on panel, using a self-developed method of fixing the paintings to a smooth, dust free finish. Her original work is available through Venue in Ballard and Bainbridge Arts and Crafts in Winslow.
