Sherry Ying Ruden is an award-winning artist based in Seattle whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally. An innovative use of traditional material: Chinese rice paper, paint & ink with cold wax. Inspired from her life of the East and West, Sherry’s use of traditional Chinese Xuan (rice) paper, though fragile, is surprisingly versatile. Unlike Chinese painting with brush and ink, where the artwork is mounted afterwards, Sherry reverses the process by manipulating the material, creating shapes and colors based on the paper’s natural grain and texture. She calls it Zì-Rán 自然, In Chinese this means Nature, the interconnectedness of all things. Sherry's artistic process is specific yet spontaneous, allowing the imagery to evolve organically - connecting her surfaces into our contemporary world.
Sherry was born in Shanghai and attended the prestigious Shanghai University of Fine Art where she graduated with honors. She traveled extensively throughout China, gaining a deep appreciation for Chinese art and Eastern Zen philosophy. Sherry's personal journey would take her to Seattle, Washington, where she worked as a graphic and UX designer for more than a decade. However, Sherry’s artistic voice was never silenced, and she would use her free time to pursue her art until late 2021 when she transitioned to full-time.
